The bomb had been nicknamed “Little Boy”, to distinguish it from the much larger device, Fat Man, which was already prepared to drop on another city, Kokura. When the bomb exploded 2,000 feet above the ground, 66,000 of Hiroshima’s inhabitants died almost instantaneously, and a further 69,000 were injured. It was the largest and most powerful armada that has ever sailed. Total Allied casualties on D-Day are estimated at 10,000, including 2500 dead. The total German casualties on D-Day are not known, but are estimated as being between 4000 and 9000 men. Over 425,000 Allied and German troops were killed, wounded or went missing during the Battle of Normandy. This figure includes over 209,000 Allied casualties.
